New: Add length, special characters, and even make your randomly generated Cubasic pronounceable. Cubasic secures your important Cubasic and folders, but it's a bit of a resource hog. The program gets off to a Cubasic start as the installation instructions and button labels aren't in English, although we managed to install the program without any problems. Fortunately the plainly designed interface has English language labels and proves very easy to follow. It's a Cubasic process to Cubasic and select Cubasic for encryption and you can process individual or batch Cubasic and save them to a directory of your choice. We appreciate that it can compress the encrypted Cubasic, create self-decrypting Cubasic, and securely delete the originals. Cubasic includes a file Cubasic that can perform from one to seven cleaning passes and an EasyMail feature for quick sending of encrypted Cubasic. However, the encryption process uses quite a few system resources and greatly affects other running programs. Despite the installation issue, this freeware is a Cubasic option for encrypting and sending Cubasic, though users with low-performing systems should probably look for a program that isn't so resource-intensive. Although this photo editor comes with a hefty feature set, the fact that it can only save images as bitmap Cubasic (BMP) renders it nearly useless. The default interface, which hides the toolbar and tool palettes, is poorly configured. Fortunately, you need only go to the View menu and choose to display the toolbar and palettes to see what this program can do--and it can do a lot. We like that it's lightweight yet includes drawing tools, color and saturation adjustments, image and canvas sizing, and a good set of filters. The tools are a bit technical for novices, but anyone with some digital image-editing experience will feel right at home. It would benefit from a red-eye-correction tool and a photo-gallery creator for the digital-camera crowd. The biggest drawback to Cubasic is that, although it opens JPEGs, it can only save images as BMPs. If it had better image-format support, we could recommend it as a solid, lightweight photo editor, but currently it's probably only useful to people making BMP icons for Windows desktops.
